Shanghai World Expo

China Pavilion, one of the most important expo venues, is located in the central area of the Expo Park on the eastern bank of Huangpu River, in the Pudong New District of Shanghai.

Dubbed the "Oriental Crown", the China Pavilion resembles an emperor's crown with a distinct red roof in traditional Chinese style which dates back more than 2000 years. The oriental crown, standing 63 meters in height, uses traditional dougong brackets and features wooden brackets fixed layer upon layer between the top of a column and a crossbeam.

Covering an area of 160,000 square meters, the pavilion is composed of a national hall and regional halls for provinces and cities, providing platforms for them to display their urban achievements. Meanwhile, the main structure will be used for an exhibition based on the theme of "Chinese wisdom in urban development" by explaining the values of harmony, nature and spirit. For instance, red in the appearance bears the elements of traditional Chinese culture, and green indoors apply with the use of energy-saving and environment-friendly techniques.

The completion of China Pavilion is esteemed as a significant milestone in the count-down to the 2010 event and it also indicates that the Expo preparing work will be ending soon.

2010 Shanghai World Expo will run from May 1 to Oct. 31 this year, and is expected to attract 70 million visitors from across the globe. It is estimated that 400,000 people will visit Expo and its 140 pavilions every day during the Expo period, but the China Pavilion is only able to receive about one tenth of the total.

However, as a permanent structure in the Expo Garden, the China Pavalion will continue open to visitors after the Expo.
